6 Harbin police officers bludgeon 22 year old college student to death

On October 11 at around 10 pm, 6 Harbin police officers bludgeoned a Harbin Atheletic Academy student to death; they dragged him out in an apparent bar room brawl, disrobed him and beat him violently. A 22-year old was killed as a result.

Is this a story emblematic of the lack of rule of law in China? of the growth in violence in urban China? of police brutality?

Thanks Jeff for bringing this to our attention. Such incidences of wanton disregard for human life and for the legal code are horrific, but let's not single out China. Police brutality is by no means isolated to China nor to authoritarian states. To keep ourselves grounded in our criticisms, think of the ties of race to police brutality in the United States that still exist today and the use of tear gas against anti-Vietnam War protesters. Though most incidences of police brutality go unreported in all countries, the widespread use of the internet and blogs have furthered the means of enforcing justice in China. Thanks to Chinese vigilantes, individuals like Jeff, and even CCTV for keeping us informed.
